1st January 1934 and 31st December 1996

This is known as the "Grandad Licence" You will be pleased to know that you keep your existing entitlement to tow trailers until your licence expires. This means that you are generally entitled to drive a vehicle and trailer combination up to a maximum of 8,250kg mass, also referred to as Maximum Authorised Mass (MAM).

Passed your car test and have not passed B+E trailer test between:
1st January 1997 and 17th January 2013

You are allowed to drive motor vehicles with no more than 8 seats with a maximum authorised mass of 3,500kg. You are also allowed to tow a trailer up to a total weight of 750kgs (this includes the trailer and any items inside). Remember the MAM of both car and trailer must not exceed 3500kg.

Other considerations

When towing a trailer up to a maximum authorised mass of 750kg, you must ensure that the MAM of the trailer does not exceed the unladen weight of the car being used to tow the trailer. This is an important consideration when trailers are shared between vehicles.

If you want to tow a caravan or trailer + load that exceeds the 750kg weight restrictions, you are required to pass an additional driving test to add section B+E to your current license.
